Steering Committee for Pipeline Project Holds Workshop

The study steering committee for the ongoing Feasibility Study for a natural gas pipeline from Dar es Salaam to Tanga (Tanzania) and Mombasa (Kenya) held an Inception Workshop in Arusha on 19 August 2010.

The objective of the meeting was to review the Inception Report submitted by the Consultant, COWI A/S (Denmark) in association with COWI Tanzania Ltd and Runji & Partners (Kenya). Committee members from all the five EAC Partner States, the EAC Secretariat and the Consultant attended the workshop.

Following the workshop, work on route survey will commence on Monday 23 August 2010. A second workshop bringing together key stakeholders in the oil and gas sector and people affected by the project is scheduled to take place in November 2010 to review Interim Report and pipeline route.

The study which commenced 5 July 2010 will run for eight months. It will cover four major areas which include: determining the route location for the proposed project, its technical feasibility, economic and financial evaluation and environmental and social impact assessment and mitigation measures.

A final workshop where the findings of the study will be presented is scheduled for January 2011.
